About Us

Started by neighbors. Sustained by neighbors.

Bay Area Meals on Wheels has been delivering hot meals to homebound seniors and adults since March 1, 1982 — entirely by volunteers, every weekday, without interruption.

Our story

In early 1982, more than fifty Clear Lake residents gathered at Clear Lake United Methodist Church around a question that had been bothering them: who was looking after the neighbors who couldn't leave their homes? The answer was no one. Out of that meeting, Bay Area Meals on Wheels was born — 8 clients, 52 volunteers, and hot meals provided each day by St. John's Hospital. Volunteers even promoted the new program from a covered wagon, which became the organization's logo.

From the beginning, the delivery was never just about food. For many clients, the person who knocked on the door was the only person they'd see all day. Drivers became an informal wellness check — proof that someone in the community was paying attention. That dual purpose has shaped every route since.

Over forty years, BAMOW has operated with no paid staff and no government contracts. Everything comes from the community: donated time, donated dollars, donated space — supplemented since approximately 2010 by annual State of Texas Department of Agriculture grants. We operate out of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. 95% of every dollar goes to food. On any given weekday, between 90 and 110 neighbors receive a hot meal at their door because people in this community keep showing up.
