Our History
Four decades of service.
Six milestones across forty-plus years of uninterrupted daily delivery — by volunteers, for neighbors.
Milestones
Key moments
- 1982
Founded at a community meeting
More than fifty Clear Lake residents gathered at Clear Lake United Methodist Church to ask who was looking after homebound neighbors. The answer was no one. Bay Area Meals on Wheels launched with 8 clients, 52 volunteers, and hot meals supplied by St. John's Hospital. Volunteers even promoted the new program from a covered wagon — which became the organization's iconic logo.
- 1997
150,000 meals served
Fifteen years in, BAMOW had delivered 150,000 hot meals and 33,000 sack lunches to nearly 1,000 clients. The program had grown steadily without a government contract — funded entirely by community donations.
- 2012
30th anniversary
The 30th anniversary was celebrated at the JSC Gilruth Center in the heart of NASA country. By then, the organization was delivering 600 meals per week with 150 volunteers — a scale that made the 1982 founders' vision look, if anything, modest.
- 2017
Hurricane Harvey response
When Hurricane Harvey devastated the Houston area, BAMOW volunteers kept routes running through flooding and debris to reach clients who had nowhere else to turn. The program served as an informal wellness check across the service area throughout the long recovery.
- 2022
40th anniversary — 800,000+ meals
BAMOW marked forty years of uninterrupted daily delivery with a celebration at the Hilton Hotel-Clear Lake. Over 800,000 meals served. Zero paid staff. The founding model, unchanged.
- Today
Every weekday, without exception
More than 130 volunteers deliver approximately 90–100 meals each weekday from our home at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. The mission is the same as 1982: neighbors serving neighbors.
