On February 23, 2023, the 100+ Women Who Care of the Clear Lake / Bay Area presented Bay Area Meals on Wheels with a check for $8,200 — the result of the giving circle's quarterly vote to direct their pooled contributions to a single local nonprofit. For an organization that runs entirely on donated time and donated dollars, it was one of the largest single-day gifts of the year.

The 100+ Women Who Care model is straightforward: members commit to giving $100 four times a year. Members nominate local nonprofits, present briefly to the group, and the room votes. One nonprofit walks away with the entire pooled gift. No overhead, no committee, no delay — just a check handed over the same afternoon.

What $8,200 means at the front door

Bay Area Meals on Wheels delivers hot meals to homebound seniors and adults with disabilities across South Harris and North Galveston counties — five days a week, every week of the year, including holidays. At an average cost of $4.20 per meal, the $8,200 gift funded close to 2,000 hot meals delivered directly to neighbors who have no other reliable way to access food.

That directness is what makes the organization unusual. BAMOW has no paid staff. Every dollar given goes to food. When a donor — or a room full of donors — writes a check, it reaches a plate within days.

The people behind the numbers

Each meal on a BAMOW route goes to someone who cannot easily get to a grocery store — someone managing a chronic illness, recovering from surgery, or simply no longer able to drive. For many clients, the daily delivery is also their primary human contact of the day. The knock at the door matters as much as what's in the bag.

Shirley Hairston, 90, has been a client since 2022. Before Meals on Wheels, severe back problems made it impossible to stand at the stove. Her doctor and family agree that without the program, she would have no choice but to enter a nursing home. "Everyone should know about this organization," she says. "If I ever need help, I know I can call Meals on Wheels and someone will be there."

Shirley is one of 90 to 100 neighbors served every weekday. Across a year, BAMOW reaches close to 200 individuals — delivering more than 21,000 hot meals, 10,000 bag lunches, and 5,000 weekend meals. In 43 years of continuous service, the organization has delivered more than 800,000 meals to the Clear Lake community.

That record is built entirely by volunteers. Each year, roughly 130 dedicated drivers and navigators give more than 12,000 hours — the equivalent of six full-time employees — to coordinate and deliver every route. They provide their own vehicles. They show up in the rain. They know their clients by name.

A community that keeps showing up

The 100+ Women Who Care gift is exactly the kind of support that keeps BAMOW running. No paid staff. No endowment. Just a community of people — and in this case, a room full of women — who decided that keeping a neighbor fed and connected is worth their hundred dollars.

We're deeply grateful to every member of 100+ Women Who Care for choosing Bay Area Meals on Wheels as their February recipient, and for demonstrating what a community of givers can accomplish in a single afternoon.
