The Leslie L. Alexander Foundation awarded Bay Area Meals on Wheels a $50,000 grant — one of the largest single gifts in the organization's recent history and a testament to what private philanthropy can do for a small, all-volunteer nonprofit.
At an average cost of $4.20 per meal, the gift funds close to twelve thousand hot meals delivered to homebound seniors and adults with disabilities across South Harris and North Galveston counties.
Every dollar reaches a plate
For an organization that runs entirely on donated time and donated dollars — BAMOW has no paid staff and no fundraising overhead — a gift of this size carries an impact that is immediate and measurable. There is no administrative layer between a donation and a delivery. Every dollar given to BAMOW reaches a plate within days.
Each meal on a BAMOW route goes to someone who cannot easily get to a grocery store — someone managing a chronic illness, recovering from surgery, or simply no longer able to drive. For many clients, the daily delivery is also their primary human contact of the day. The knock at the door matters as much as what’s in the bag.
“When the right supporters believe in what you’re doing, it changes what’s possible for the neighbors you serve.”
Forty-three years of front doors
Bay Area Meals on Wheels has served the Clear Lake community since 1982 — five days a week, every week, including holidays. Over forty-three years of continuous service, the organization has delivered more than 800,000 meals. Every route is driven by volunteers who provide their own vehicles, know their clients by name, and show up in the rain.
Across a year, BAMOW delivers more than 21,000 hot meals, 10,000 bag lunches, and 5,000 weekend meals — serving 90 to 100 neighbors every weekday and reaching close to 200 individuals annually. The 130 volunteers who make that possible give more than 12,000 hours each year — the equivalent of six full-time employees.
We are deeply grateful to the Leslie L. Alexander Foundation for this extraordinary gift and for their belief in the work being done every weekday across the Clear Lake community.
